The American Red Cross Needs You!

Blood Drives. Workers are needed to register donors, to escort them to the canteen, and to serve juice and cookies. Time commitment can be as few as 2 hours, once per month, or more if you are available. Blood drives take place at various locations in Battle Creek and the surrounding areas including Marshall, Coldwater, Albion, Quincy, and Tekonsha. Days and times vary. No experience necessary.

Blood Donor Scheduler. Seeking volunteers to do reminder calls for upcoming blood drives between the hours of 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday with flexible scheduling and shifts. If desired, this position can often be done in the comfort of your own home.

Canteen Drivers. Seeking volunteers who can deliver the canteen cart to blood drives in Branch and Calhoun County, using a Red Cross vehicle. Time varies depending on location. Position requires a valid driver′s license, ability to push a cart up a ramp into vehicle and ability to lift and bend. Drivers must meet a minimum age requirement of 21 years old.

Shuttle drivers are needed to drive routes that include area hospitals and the Lansing Red Cross Blood Center. Driver's pick-up and deliver blood products. Monday's or Thursday's, 9:00 am to 3:00 p.m. Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age with a good driving record to qualify for this position.

Truck Loader/Un-loader Seeking volunteers who can unload blood drive equipment from the blood truck before the blood drives and load after blood drives. Shifts are approximately 1-2 hours each. Must be able to lift, bend and handle awkward equipment.

The Red Cross also needs Military Caseworkers. This program, mandated by Congress, requires dependable, responsible people to send and receive messages between servicemen and their families. The casework is done by phone from the volunteer's home between the hours of 5:00 pm and 9:00 am. A cell phone and pager are supplied to the volunteer. Caseworkers serve one week per month. Training is provided.

Disaster Caseworkers are needed to be on-call during non-office hours. Caseworkers handle small disasters such as house fires by helping those affected secure food, clothing, and shelter until the Red Cross office opens. Training provided.

Cell phone and pager supplied by the Red Cross. Hours are the same as for a military caseworker (above). Disaster volunteers are also needed as team members for responses to larger scale disasters. Volunteers are needed to work at the VA Medical Center in the Red Cross Coffee Program. These workers serve coffee and cookies to veterans waiting for medical appointments. Weekday mornings, 4 hour shifts. The VA Medical Center also offers a variety of other opportunities to Red Cross volunteers.

Red Cross volunteers are needed in the Community Relations Department. Volunteers will help promote the Red Cross by completing presentations in the community, participating in health/safety fairs, special events, and other tasks. Flexible scheduling, training provided, and opportunities for all skill levels.

Various opportunities are available for those who would like to volunteer at the Red Cross Chapter House. Class preparation, special projects, general maintenance, office work, and many other tasks are available to assist operation.

One can also volunteer without having to leave the comfort of home. Volunteers are needed to help with mailings and to call donors for blood donations. The calls are all local. These are just two of the ways you can volunteer without having to drive anywhere.
