Red Cross Responds to Early Morning Apartment Fire
at Maple Grove Senior Apartment Complex in Albion /

Red Cross Disaster Assistance Budget Reaches Critically Low State

An early morning fire on Thursday, August 14th displaced all of the residents of Maple Grove Senior Apartment Complex in Albion, Michigan. The American Red Cross was on the scene within hours providing comfort, blankets, food, medical needs and other assistance.

Temporary shelters were set up at Albion College in Munger Hall through Sunday when the disaster victims were moved to other sites. So far, the Red Cross has provided assistance to 51 families from this disaster with items like food, clothing, shelter, blankets, comfort kits, medicine, medical needs and more. The Red Cross has already spent more than $15,000 on just this disaster with the final cost expecting to be more than $25,000.

"Your local American Red Cross needs the financial help of our communities and businesses right away," said Joni Hatch, CEO of the local Red Cross chapter. "Due to the huge increase in multi-family fires this past year, the local Red Cross has already depleted its emergency relief budget for the year. With the addition of this large scale disaster, we need financial help. Each year, our disaster assistance budget is determined by averaging the annual cost of disasters over a 5 year period and we have surpassed," said Hatch.

You can make a tax deductible donation by mailing your check to: American Red Cross 14600 Beadle Lake Road Battle Creek, MI 49014 or by calling the office at 269.962.7528 or you can make a secure on-line donation here on our website at http://calhounbranchmi.redcross.org/donate.html.

The Calhoun Branch Red Cross chapter is not a government agency, we must rely on the generosity of the American public. With your ongoing support, we will continue to be there providing . . . relief for today and hope for tomorrow to people in crisis. The Red Cross would like to thank Albion College and all of our volunteers for their awesome assistance and help during this disaster, said Hatch.

American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of thousands of disasters across the country each year, disasters like the Maple Grove Apartment fire, by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling, medical needs and other assistance to victims of disaster. The American Red Cross honors donor intent. If you wish to designate your donation to a specific disaster please do so at the time of your donation.
