As part of our mission, the Calhoun County Chapter of the American Red Cross teaches people how to prepare for disasters. This is accomplished through the Community Disaster Education (CDE) program.

As part of the CDE program, Red Cross volunteers go onsite to local schools, community groups, churches, workplaces, senior centers and service clubs to teach people how to prepare for, and react to, disasters such as house and apartment fires, tornadoes, thunderstorms, and floods.

Community Education in October

The Calhoun County Branch of the American Red Cross was proud to partner with fellow community non–profit partner, The Kingman Museum and provide community education in October.

With the help of AmeriCorps Representative, Zach Cahalan, the Red Cross was able to promote Lightning Safety at the Kingman Museum′s annual Spooky Science Saturday event. The young patrons were treated to Twinkies and had the opportunity to create their own Frankenstein′s. After learning about the power of static electricity to "ignite" their Frankenstein′s, the children were treated to some timely lightning safety advice.

The Kingman Museum reported that this years Spooky Science Saturday was its largest ever with a record breaking attendance estimated at over 1,000 people. The Red Cross unfortunately did not have enough supplies to meet such a great demand, but was glad to disseminate important preparedness and safety information to community families. We look forward to working with Kingman Museum in the future!
