Blood Services
Who can donate blood? You! If you are 17 years old or older, in good general health and weigh 110 pounds or more you may be eligible to donate blood every 56 days. Patients in 127 Michigan hospitals depend on steady and consistent blood donations to ensure a safe and adequate supply for ongoing and emergency medical needs. The Red Cross must collect about 1,600 pints of blood in Michigan each weekday to meet hospital demand. Hospitals rely on volunteer blood donations to meet these needs.
We need your help. Bitter cold, snow, ice and poor road conditions since the beginning of February have forced the cancellation of 19 blood drives through the American Red Cross. These combined shutdowns resulted in the loss of 950 blood donations. At blood drives remaining open, turnout has been low, causing overall donations for the month to drop by 15 percent. Hospital patients need blood for surgeries, injuries and accidents regardless of the weather.
Your single blood donation can help save up to three lives. You do make a difference. Please, remember to eat a good meal of iron rich foods before coming in and drink plenty of fluids the day before and the day of your donation.

On the behalf of the patients whose lives you will save, thank you for your interest in donating blood to the American Red Cross. Your gift really will help others to live.
