Battle Creek Central High School and The American Red Cross
Team Up To Save Lives and Honor Martin Luther King Jr.

For years, Battle Creek Central High School and the American Red Cross have been working together to save lives through blood drives. The Battle Creek Central Red Cross Club began 6 years ago and is still going strong with current membership around 15 students. Co-advisors, Dr Holly Schafer and Jenny Evans, work with students on the many tasks required for a successful blood drive. Advisors and students design and display posters to promote the blood drive, procure and serve refreshments, meet with Red Cross staff, help with the physical set up and take down of the blood drive, recruit donors and donate blood themselves!

For the 2007–2008 school year, the Red Cross Club has chosen to sponsor three blood drives. If blood donation goals are met, three senior Red Cross Club members will qualify for $1,000.00 American Red Cross scholarships to the college of their choice. The first of the three blood drives was held at Battle Creek Central High School on November 16, 2007. With a goal of collecting 71 units of blood, success was achieved. 95 donors, including 63 first time donors, presented at the drive resulting in a total of 78 units collected, 110% of goal. A second scholarship drive will be in January and a third in April.

The next, Battle Creek Central sponsored, blood drive will be held on January 25, 2008 at the Masonic Center, 133 E. Michigan Ave., in Battle Creek from 12:00 pm-5:45 pm. This drive is in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. For eight years Michigan residents have joined others in honoring Martin Luther King Jr. in a truly heartfelt way by donating blood. A commemorative Martin Luther King Jr. t-shirt will be given to each presenting donor, while supplies last.

If you would like to be involved in supporting the youth of our community, honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., as well as saving up to three lives please plan on donating blood at the Masonic Center on January 25.

The American Red Cross would like to thank the dedicated Battle Creek Central Red Cross Club members, as well as the donors, for helping to make the blood drives successful.
